The Work Health and Safety Regulation and the Code of Practice “How to Manage and Control Asbestos in the Workplace” require all buildings constructed prior to 31 December 2003 and operating as a workplace to have an Asbestos Register and Asbestos Management Plan. Australian Standard AS2601 Demolition of Structures requires that the structures and all parts of the site to be examined in order to determine the presence of hazardous materials before commencement of any renovation or demolition. Identified hazardous building materials must be removed under controlled condition prior to disturbance. Local Councils require an asbestos inspection and hazardous materials inspection and a submission of an Asbestos Survey Report (asbestos register) or Hazardous Materials Survey Report (hazardous materials register) for buildings constructed prior to 1990 as part of a Development Application (DA) documentation. The WHS Regulation require that removal of asbestos is undertaken in accordance with the Code of Practice “How to Safely Remove Asbestos”.
