What is relationship counselling?
Relationship counselling (also known as couples therapy, or marriage counselling) provides a safe, supportive, and confidential environment where you can explore issues, challenges, and growth opportunities in your relationship. Relationship counselling is about working with a trained and impartial third party to work through issues, and better understand what each of you might want.

What if I need support right now?
If you need immediate support, you can phone:

More information from Qld Government is available here.

What issues can relationship counselling help with?
Some issues relationship counselling can help with include:

  • Communication difficulties

  • Unresolved conflict

  • Emotions, anger, reactivity

  • Different life goals

  • Intimacy and romance

  • Sexual issues

  • Affairs or breaches of trust

  • Impacts of stress or work

  • Families and in-laws

  • Financial differences

How do I find a good relationship counsellor?
Its important to ask a potential relationship counsellor lots of questions. Think about the particular issue that has made you want relationship counselling, and also think about any recurring issues in your relationship. Then ask the relationship counsellor if they have experience with these issues? What process would they follow to approach these types of issues?  How long would they expect the process to take? How many sessions, and how often, they think the process might require?

In addition to a relationship counsellor’s skills and background, it’s important that they feel right for you. Could you sit and talk with this person regularly? For however long is needed? Do you feel you can relate to them as an equal? Do you feel they are listening and really hearing you? Could you talk freely with them? It’s important to follow your instincts with these questions. Finding someone that feels right for you and your partner can often be more important than anything else.

What if my partner is reluctant about relationship counselling?
I’ve written a blog article specifically on this topic which you may find helpful https://transformational-coaching-counselling.com.au/blog/2019/11/relationship-counselling It includes tips for how to get a reluctant partner to try out relationship counselling. My practice is in Brisbane, however i also offer online appointments.

What should I expect from relationship counselling?
I am skilled in a range of methodologies (including Emotionally Focussed Therapy for couples, the Gottman approach, and CBT for couples) however, the way I would work with you would depend on your individual circumstances and needs. Some clients have a particular problem they want to explore and discuss, and want support in that discussion. Other clients may find that their partner is not open to discussing a particular topic, or gets too emotional or angry about a certain issue, so I can help with keeping a conversation constructive and balanced. Some clients need to initially clear the air, and then once a topic has been broached, they are comfortable carrying on no longer needing a third party, while others want longer term support to work through deeper or more complex issues.

No matter what your reason for seeking a third party, a good relationship counsellor will be able to help you sort through your issues or questions, so that you can make better, more informed, decisions about how you want to move forward. For some people this might lead them to a conscious break up, however, for others this can allow them to move into a new and better phase of their relationship, with new understanding and love.

Every situation is unique, don’t hesitate to make contact with me about what you need. If you call, or send me an email or SMS, I can arrange a time for an initial conversation where I can answer any questions you might have.

Do I Have To Commit To A Certain Number Of Sessions?
No. People seek relationship counselling for a variety of reasons. Some counselling relationships can last just a few weeks. Some can last a couple of months. Some people choose to attend less frequently but over a period of years rather than weekly. It all depends what you want out of the process.

How Much Does A Session Cost? And How Long Are They?
My prices are available here - full list of prices. Standard sessions are typically 60 or 90 minutes, shorter or longer sessions can be arranged, depending on existing bookings.

Sometimes The Hardest Thing Is Making The First Contact...
...but when you do, know that you are taking the first step toward creating the life that you want. Please feel free to ask me any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them. All communications are strictly confidential.

If you have booked an appointment I will look forward to seeing you on your chosen day/time. If you emailed questions, please give me a little more time to properly consider them, but in general I will aim to get back to you within 48 hours.

Career counselling or career coaching is more that just ‘taking a personality test’ and ‘picking a career’. Good career coaching should be able to offer much deeper reflection about where you might want to go, and how you might want to get there. Career counselling can also help shrink any self-doubt, under-confidence, or anxiety, that may arise, and can help you create realistic steps to achieving your career goals. Most importantly, a good career coach or career counsellor is one who…

At some point in our lives, we’ve all heard someone suggest counselling. When you think about counselling, you might imagine laying on a sofa, while someone asks you about your childhood. Thankfully, there is more than one kind of counselling. Holistic counselling is a form of counselling focused on the entirety of an individual.
