Lissa walked me through making a shirt and it was so thorough and helpful! She taught me some sewing techniques along the way that I will continue to use that made the process easier as well. You can tell that she cares about her students and helping them. Can't wait to come back and take another workshop or class! Thanks Lissa!

I feel like we hit the jackpot with discovering these classes. My daughter has attended multiple sessions with Lissa and Rob and has created some amazing designs, met friends, collaborated on projects, and gained a lot of confidence in her sewing and design skills. Such a wonderful experience all around!

I absolutely loved this skirt-making class! Rob is a phenomenal instructor—patient, encouraging, and so talented. His step-by-step guidance through measuring, drafting, fitting, and sewing made what initially felt daunting completely approachable and fun. I came in with basic sewing skills and left with a beautifully tailored pencil skirt—and the confidence to make more on my own.

The class was thoughtfully structured, from drafting the custom pattern to refining the fit with muslin and finishing with learning how to insert a zipper, adding a hook and eye, and sewing a blind hem. Rob was attentive throughout, offering hands-on help whenever I needed.

This workshop is perfect for anyone looking to deepen their sewing skills or explore garment construction from the ground up. I can’t recommend it enough!

Fantastic classes!!!! I have taken 2 of the quilt lab classes and will take them all. As a relative beginner, Dona McKenzie is the best teacher I can imagine. Totally patient!! And fun!! This is the only class of this type in all of LA IN PERSON where these quilt blocks are taught. Great fabrics for our choice are included!!! Rob & Lissa have created something really special here. It was an inspiring experience learning the process of creativity, how you can go from an idea or a word to a full flown look in just 8-weeks. I was a little intimidated by a couple of the parts like learning how to sketch my own designs or create my own fabric, but Rob really broke it down in such a way and provided such excellent examples, that those fears turned into a fun way to stretch my skills. I really enjoyed the process of creating my own fabric. I ended up sewing a pair of incredibly comfortable pants from the fabric I created which was a surreal experience. With the expertise of Rob & Lissa, I was able to create a coat I've had in my head for two years into a full fledge garment that I continue to get compliments on. It was my favorite couple hours of the week where I was able to put aside my day job and become this incredibly creative person who could create anything her mind came up with! I had zero design experience before this class so this class is really for any level. I continue to love all the classes that Lissa offers at Moving Thread and Rob is an absolute delight to work with.

I had the most amazing, inspiring, enjoyable, and motivated time participating in the Moving Thread classes. I first took the intro to sewing class taught by Rosie Ponizil, who is a fantastic and patient instructor. I have never sewn or touched a sewing machine in my life and walked away with a super cute tote bag. The class taught the very basic skills from threading the machine, the mechanics of the machine, learning the basic stitch, plus so much more . I was so wowed by the class I took the 4 week beginner series workshop, taught by Lissa an absolute amazing, thorough, patient instructor who delves deep into instruction. I plan to take a few more classes to build on the learning experience. I highly recommend taking these classes especially if you’re a total beginner. I can’t say enough about what a wonderful experience this has been and what a great business/service this is especially now in an online world where face to face interaction is becoming a lost art. The in-person experience is invaluable! Thank you Lissa for providing your service, a skill everyone should learn.

Here is my review: Fantastic! We are signed up for our 4th round. My daughter LOVES it, as a parent we love it. Multiple physical project outputs, creativity, consistency, community. This is 20hours of work in 8 weeks! It is wonderful to see my daughter feel pride in what she created and have everyone helping. This class is truly fantastic. My daughter is 8 and she is designing her own pattern, printing, cutting, sewing entire outfits. Unreal!

This is my third quilting class with Moving Thread and Dona as our teacher. It’s always so fun and I learn new skills. Can’t wait for the next one!

I took one of Dona's quilt lab classes as my first introduction to quilting. I've been a garment sewist for a couple of years but had always wanted to try my hand at quilting. I was a little nervous about making the switch. I am so glad I chose Dona's class as my first class. I learned so much in a short amount of time, and made a beautiful quilt block that I am so proud of. Dona was super patient and provided a lot of hands-on instruction. I would definitely take a class with Dona again, and continue to love all the classes I've taken at Moving Thread.

I had been wanting to learn pattern drafting and making but was intimidated trying to learn it on my own. Something like drafting a pattern to a pencil skirt felt so overwhelming because of how form fitting it is. My “how do they do this?!?” has been fully answered with this class. Rob makes it SO EASY to understand, step by step, on how to systematically draft your own pattern using your own measurements. It was great to experience sewing the first draft in muslin, then adjusting the pattern to what you adjusted on the muslin. I couldn’t be more happy with how my skirt turned out. I feel so so so much more confident in my ability to tweak patterns I buy on my own and even drafting my own future skirts. I really recommend this class!!

I took a group sewing lesson last year with Lissa and felt very empowered. I've been wanting to sew for years in order to hem my own clothes, so I bought a sewing machine and signed up for a private lesson in order to learn how to use the machine. Lissa was so wonderful and sweet! She walked me through setting it up until I was comfortable doing it on my own. Then we practiced several types of hemming techniques on some of my old jeans for me to repeat at home. I would recommend a lesson with Lissa for anyone who wishes to gain skills and confidence in sewing!

I had a wonderful time during this workshop - Lissa is a wonderful teacher, even as she 'teaches' 5 different people 5 different things! I came out with some finished stuff - a couple of projects I had half done, and some that I did from start to finish - and a lot more knowledge and confidence to take home with me!

Lissa is a true expert! Her lifelong sewing experience makes her a master at teaching and breaking down sewing concepts for any type of sewer. Lissa’s studio is a welcoming environment and a good opportunity to meet other people. Thank you, Lissa!
