Transfer LEARN
 T-LEARN™ is for students transferring to FAU from a state, or community, college. T-LEARN™ students must have an A.A. degree. 

T-LEARN™ is a learning community established at FAU in 2016 that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students’ academic success. By working with on-campus partners, T-LEARN™ provides a select group of 20 first-year, transfer students a hands-on learning experience by helping students engage in research. 

Students in this program will:

  1. Experience a small learning community at a large research university. Transitioning to a large university can be a bit daunting to a first-year, transfer student. We provide opportunities for our T-LEARN™ students to build one-on-one relationships with faculty, staff, and other students on campus.
  2. Receive priority course registration and a scholarship (up to $2000). 
  3. Enroll in Introduction to Research courses to produce a research proposal and poster presentation Each course is 1 credit hour: Fundamentals of Research and Inquiry  is taken in the fall semester and Introduction to Undergraduate Research Design  is taken in the spring semester. The cost of the courses will be waived.
  4. Engage in research with a faculty mentor.
  5. Participate in academic, social, and community service activities through FAU-sponsored events to build and strengthen their network of peers.
  6. Acquire skills that will make them qualified and competitive to apply to upper-level undergraduate research programs. 

Academics are a strong component of the T-LEARN™ program. All accepted students will take two classes together. Part I, Fundamentals of Research and Inquiry, is taken in the fall semester and Part II, Introduction to Undergraduate Research Design, is taken in the spring semester. In Fundamentals of Research and Inquiry, s  tudents will learn how to navigate the FAU community, learn about available resources, and be introduced to the skills and concepts necessary for scientific research. In addition, students will actively work to secure a faculty mentor. In Introduction to Undergraduate Research Design,   students will expand their research skills by learning how to formulate research questions, develop communication skills, and develop a research proposal and poster.

T-LEARN™ students will have various mentors during their time in the program. Each student will be assigned a Peer Mentor who is an upperclassman involved in research. Through monthly meetings with their Peer Mentor, students will receive assistance in their transition to FAU, first-hand suggestions for time management, and someone to talk to who is excited about research too!

T-LEARN™ students will benefit from faculty mentorship. Faculty mentors will mentor students regarding the research process and they can offer invaluable advice on graduate education, research experience, and possible insight into future careers.

T-LEARN™ students will also benefit from faculty and staff mentoring.






[Image: Mentoring]  The LEARN™ community component is built on a variety of experiences together. All students in the program will attend a one-day orientation before classes begin to meet both their cohort and the mentors working with them throughout the year. During this orientation, they will participate in team building exercises. 

Throughout the semester, students will attend 6 academic and social events, and at least 1 community service event pre-scheduled through the program staff.  Many of these events are organized on-campus to build the LEARN™ team into the greater FAU community.
