Chicago Green Healthcare Initiative

The Chicago Green Health Care Initiative (CGHI) is an effort to create a model for sustainable healthcare that improves patient access to care, generates cost-effective and persistent greenhouse gas reductions while improving the health infrastructure, economic opportunity, quality of life in the community. The U.S. EPA awarded the city of Chicago a Climate Showcase Communities Grant as of January 1, 2010, to support the creation of a model of sustainable community action over the course of three years that generates cost-effective and persistent greenhouse gas reductions while improving the environmental, economic, public health, and social conditions in the community. The Chicago Green Healthcare Initiative affords the health care sector an opportunity to play a leadership role in Chicago's broader sustainability efforts. Consistent with the goals of the Chicago Climate Action Plan, hospitals participating in the CGHI commit to operational improvements in reducing energy consumption/intensity and reducing waste. The Chicago Dept. of Environment (CDOE) is the grantee and Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) is the sub grantee. Learn more about the Chicago Green Healthcare Initiative
