Clinician Pledge to Get SMART About Your Hospital Food

The Clinician Champions in Comprehensive Antibiotic Stewardship (CCCAS) Collaborative is concerned about the rise in antibiotic resistance that is making treatment of bacterial infections increasingly difficult.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem that more and more patients and providers are facing each day, and antibiotic overuse is a major contributor to this problem. While as many as 50% of antibiotic prescriptions may be overly broad or even unnecessary, animal agriculture uses four times the amount of antibiotics as human medicine, and mostly in healthy animals for growth promotion or disease prevention on crowded farms.

We are advocating for a broader concept of antimicrobial stewardship in our practice. As a clinician, please join us in protecting antibiotics by participating in the following activity leading up to the CDC’s Get SMART week this November.

As a clinician, I am concerned about the rise in antibiotic resistance that is making treatment of bacterial infections increasingly difficult. I am concerned about antibiotic overuse, in humans and animals alike. Therefore, I commit to write a letter to my local hospital CEO or CMO requesting a resolution to phase out the purchase of meat raised with routine antibiotics.
