HEALTHY ENERGY INITIATIVE | Multi-agency Forum on Impacts of Energy Sources
News  posted by hcwhasia  on April 8, 2018

The Healthy Energy Initiative team together with Greenpeace Philippines joined a Multi-agency Forum on Impacts of Energy Sources organized by Koalisyon Isalbar Ti Pintas Ti La Union (Save the Beauty of La Union Coalition) in San Fernando, La Union, Philippines.

The town of Luna, a seaside town with white sand beaches and 45 minutes north of San Fernando, has recently been alarmed with the proposed 80-billion pesos Coal-fired Power Plant development led by the Global Luzon Energy Development Corporation (GLEDC). The plan has been revealed by GLEDC and other agencies last December 2017. The construction will cover a vast 41-hectare area across Baranggay Carisquis and Nalvo Sur in the said coastal town.

Contrary to the statement released by the Vice Mayor of Luna and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, community members are not very happy with the Coal Plant development -- they are aware that it will destroy the breezy and pristine environment Luna is known for.

Thus, campaign movements and coalitions like Koalisyon Isalbar Ti Pintas Ti La Union and Save Luna were formed in order to stand collectively against such destructive propositions.

As a step towards sustainability and strengthening of their campaign, the Coalition organized a Forum held last April 5, 2018 at the Peoples' Hall, San Fernando City, La Union, which gathered representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and Department of Environment and Natural Resources as well as international nonprofit organizations and community organizers to talk about various environmental and health impacts of dirty energy sources like Coal.

The coalition and its partner organizations plan to hold a mobilization in front of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Central Office this coming April 10, 2018 to urge the government to stop the proposed coal plant development in their town.
