Making Inhalers Accessible to All - A Step Towards Ensuring Health Equity
Global inequities in healthcare access have long been a pressing issue, with respiratory diseases like asthma and COPD disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. The life-saving role of inhalers cannot be overstated, yet millions worldwide struggle to afford or obtain these essential medications. This disparity underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to making inhalers accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status or geographic location.

Achieving health equity in inhaler access requires a multi-pronged strategy. Firstly, lowering the cost of inhalers through innovative pricing models, generic alternatives, and negotiations with pharmaceutical companies is crucial. Secondly, strengthening supply chains and distribution networks, particularly in remote and underserved areas, can improve availability. Thirdly, healthcare system reforms, including universal health coverage and subsidies for low-income patients, can alleviate financial barriers. Additionally, education and awareness campaigns can empower communities to understand and manage respiratory conditions effectively. By addressing these factors holistically, we can take a significant step towards ensuring that every individual has access to the life-sustaining inhalers they need, promoting health equity and upholding the fundamental human right to healthcare.

How do I know if my cough is from asthma?
It's more likely to be asthma if your cough is accompanied by other asthma symptoms, like wheezing, breathlessness or chest tightness. Not everyone with asthma coughs. If you do cough it's usually dry, or someone with uncontrolled asthma might have thick clear mucus when they cough.
How do you treat an asthma cough?
Asthma medications prescribed by your allergist will help to relieve the coughing attacks. These include a fast-acting bronchodilator inhaler, which expands the airways in the lungs and offers quick relief, or a corticosteroid inhaler, which relieves inflammation when used daily. Often both types are needed.

What does an asthmatic cough sound like?
People with asthma often experience persistent coughing due to the inflammation in their lungs and airways. Their cough may sound quite different from coughs caused by seasonal allergies or common colds. This is because asthma coughs tend to produce a whistling or wheezing sound in the chest.
